Planning a trip to France? Join us for French for the Traveler, a 3-week course designed to help you feel more confident and prepared before your trip. We’ll cover essential French phrases, travel tips, cultural insights, and safety advice. Whether you're visiting Paris or exploring the countryside, you'll leave with the knowledge and confidence to make the most of your trip.
This class will be taught in English, with a mix of language instruction and travel advice (Please note: this is not a 3-week intensive course).
Course Outline
Session 1: Before You Go
Dive into basic French expressions crucial for any traveler. Learn the ins and outs of booking lodging and plane tickets, communicating with your phone provider and bank, and staying informed about potential transport issues. We'll discuss how to plan your attire according to the season, outline major and free activities, and delve into French manners with insights from "The Bonjour Effect."
Session 2: Getting There
Prepare for your flight, understand airport signage, and plan your route from the airport to your lodging. We'll share tips on managing jet lag, making the most of multi-leg trips, and navigating the metro system. Learn about purchasing train tickets through SNCF and other train options, ensuring a smooth transition to your French adventure.
Session 3: Being There and Safety
Master the art of ordering at a restaurant, acquaint yourself with the French eating schedule, and learn how to blend in. We'll cover essential safety tips, including how to avoid pickpockets and navigate Paris safely. Discover the importance of politeness in shops, the treasures of local pharmacies, bakeries, and markets, and how to embrace French culture fully. Recommendations for further reading and navigation, like "Paris par Arrondissement," will also be provided.
