Copains du Mardi - Mai

Join us for the May meeting of Les Copains du Mardi where we will be discussing Au bonheur des dames by Émile Zola.

This novel presents a vivid portrait of the rise of the modern department store in late 19th-century Paris through the story of Denise Baudu, a young provincial woman who comes to work in a store threatening traditional small businesses. Through Denise's experiences and her relationship with the store's owner, Zola explores capitalism, consumerism, and changing gender roles in a work that's more accessible than some of his bleaker novels.

Les Copains du Mardi is a book club for advanced/fluent speakers of French. Organized by one of our longtime members, Cindy Marrs, Les Copains usually meets offsite at a member’s house and has space for around eight individuals. If you are interested in joining, please contact Cindy to see if there is room. You may reach her by email at lbmarrs@gmail.com.
