In Feuilleton de l'histoire de France, our journey takes us through the significant chapters of French history, beginning with the era of early rulers such as Clovis and Pépin le Bref. These figures set the foundational stones of what would become a complex and vibrant nation. We'll explore crucial events like the "Partage de Verdun," which divided an empire and shaped the future of Europe, and the "Serment de Strasbourg," highlighting the early nuances of diplomatic relations.

As we move forward, the course delves into the establishment of the Capetian dynasty by Hugues Capet, setting the stage for centuries of monarchy. We will study influential kings like Philippe Auguste, whose reign expanded French territories, and Saint Louis, known for his judicial reforms. The Renaissance period, ignited by François Ier, brings a transformative wave of art, culture, and the pivotal Ordonnance de Villers-Cotterêts, marking a significant linguistic and administrative shift.

The narrative then transitions to the complex politics of the late Renaissance and early modern period, embodied by figures such as Catherine de Médicis and the rule of Henri IV, leading to the development of absolutism under Louis XIII and his minister, Richelieu. The grandeur of Louis XIV's reign, characterized by cultural flourishing and consolidation of royal power, sets a prelude to the dramatic shifts of the 18th century.

The course will also navigate through the turbulent waters of the French Revolution, the rise and fall of Napoleon I, and the oscillating periods of monarchy and republicanism that followed. Through these stories, students will gain an enriched understanding of the multifaceted layers of French history, from its regal beginnings to the establishment of the Republic in 1870. This class offers a balanced exploration, designed to be engaging and accessible, providing a deeper appreciation for the events and figures that have woven the rich historical tapestry of France.
